Holiday greetings from BrainSTARS! We have entered the month of Navarathri and Deepavali and the festive mood has caught up all around us in Bangalore.
The October calendar explores the science inside firecrackers, at the same time cautioning everyone to celebrate responsibly.
A firecracker produces three distinct effects – light, sound and heat. The chemical composition of the fuel is a mixture of oxidising agents (mostly metal nitrates), reducing agents (mostly charcoal & Sulphur) and colouring agents (mostly metal salts)
The combustion of the fuel produces enormous amounts of heat energy. This energy when released from a confined space to the open air results in the rapid expansion of air producing the sound effects. The metal salts in the fuel produce the bright lights.
Firecrackers can be as dangerous as they are fascinating. We wish you all a safe and happy festival season.
