The night sky hosts a horde of spectacular phenomena for us to watch and wonder about; one such phenomenon is meteor showers.
The November Calendar takes a sneak peek at the formation of meteor showers in general and visualizes the Leonids in particular.
Meteor showers are regularly occurring events caused due to the Earth’s orbit overlapping with a comet’s orbit. Comets leave vast trails of icy and dusty debris in their orbits around the Sun. When the Earth passes through this debris stream, the particles burn up in the atmosphere creating streaks of light – meteor showers. Some of the burning meteors may strike the surface of the Earth creating meteorite craters.
The Leonid showers are expected to appear on the 17 November from midnight to about 6 am IST. They can be viewed best away from city lights. We wish you all a fabulous sky gazing.
